Beginner Level Course
Course Overview
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the art of flute performance within the rich tapestry of Hindustani music. Students will immerse themselves in the intricate scales and systems of Hindustani music, gaining a deep understanding of diverse musical forms and ragas through both theoretical exploration and practical application. Core topics include fundamental music theory concepts such as swara, Nada, Sruti, Gamaka, Raga, and Tala, alongside an exploration of the critical elements of “Khyal Gaayki” and “Gatkari” in classical music. Furthermore, students will master essential techniques for captivating flute performances, including the adept use of the Tanpura/drone, nuanced understanding of pitch/shruthi, and precision in playing with a pitch reference. Throughout the course, students will progress through a curated selection of ragas, including Bhoopali, Yaman, and Hansdhwani, refining their flute proficiency and musical expression.

Learning Outcomes : By the end of the course, students will
- Apply basic principles and techniques of voice production appropriate to Indian music.
- Develop an understanding of swaras, sampoorna, audav, and audav-sampoorna scales, and analyze/decode songs in terms of swaras and scales.
- Gain proficiency in playing simple songs with ease and perfection, utilizing the acquired knowledge of musical notes and rhythms.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform and present ragas on stage with confidence, incorporating techniques learned in Hindustani music theory and practice.
- Develop a nuanced understanding of different ragas, including Bhoopali, Yaman, and Hansdhwani, and their distinctive features, melodic structures, and emotional expressions.
Second Level
Advanced Level Course
Course Overview
The Advanced Level course for flute performance is tailored for dedicated students of Hindustani Classical Music seeking to deepen their understanding and proficiency in Raga Music. With a focus on classical performance, students will explore the intricate traditions and foundations of Shastriya music, diving into the complexities of Raga Music and its improvisational techniques.
From the outset, students will be introduced to the art of flute performance, including various improvisational methods such as alaap, bol-alaap, sargam, taan, bol-taan, and bol-baant. Progressing through the levels, they will master the nuances of Madhyalaya and Drut Khayal, Tarana, and Thumri, refining their improvisational skills and performance practices along the way.
This course serves as a pathway for flute students to advance to the next level, where they will further develop into full-fledged Khayal performers. Starting with a focus on strengthening their command over swaras and tala, students will also gain proficiency in the ten mother scales (thaats) and ragas of Hindustani Music, including Bilaval, Kalyan, Khamaj, Kafi, Bhairav, Purvi, Marwa, Todi, Asavari, and Bhairavi.
Pre-Requisites / Entry Requirements
- Prior practical training in flute playing is required.
- Basic knowledge and a keen interest in Hindustani Classical Music as a listener would be advantageous.

- Possess mastery over the tala system, enabling them to perform fluently in major Madhyalaya and Drut talas, enhancing their rhythmic precision and versatility.
Third Level
Master Level Course

Designed for flutists with a solid foundation and a commitment to excellence, this course aims to elevate students’ artistry to the next level, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to excel as accomplished performers and musicians.
Advanced Performance Realms: At the Master Level, students delve deeper into the intricacies of Hindustani Classical flute performance, exploring advanced forms such as Madhyalaya and Drut Khayal, Tarana, and Thumri. Through the flute, students develop a nuanced understanding of these forms, mastering the art of improvisation and expression to create compelling and evocative musical interpretations.
Raga Mastery: The course curriculum encompasses a diverse repertoire of ragas, carefully selected to challenge students and broaden their musical horizons on the flute. Students explore ragas such as Bihag, Malkauns, Madhuwanti, Puriya, Gurjari Todi, Marwa, Ahir Bharav, and others, delving into their melodic intricacies, emotive qualities, and stylistic nuances on the flute.
Advanced Training and Technique: Throughout the course, students undergo intensive training in advanced flute techniques, including ornamentation, articulation, breath control, and phrasing. They refine their skills in alaap, bol-alaap, sargam, taan, bol-taan, and bol-baant, honing their ability to convey emotion, mood, and narrative through their flute playing with precision and expressiveness.

Advanced Performance Realms: At this level, students delve deep into the venerated Vilambit Khayal, a form of Hindustani Classical Music characterized by its slow tempo and elaborate improvisation. Through the flute, students explore the intricate melodic patterns, emotive qualities, and historical significance of Vilambit Khayal, honing their skills to captivate audiences and evoke profound emotional experiences.
Raga Exploration: The course curriculum encompasses a rich and diverse repertoire of ragas, meticulously selected to challenge students and expand their musical horizons on the flute. Students explore ragas such as Bhimpalasi, Puriya Kalyan, Bageshri, Multani, Patdeep, Shyam Kalyan, Bairagi Bharav, Rageshri, and Gaud Sarang, delving into their unique melodic structures and expressive potential on the flute.
Advanced Training and Technique: Throughout the course, students undergo rigorous training in advanced flute techniques, including ornamentation, breath control, articulation, and phrasing. They refine their skills in alaap, bol-alaap, sargam, taan, bol-taan, and bol-baant, mastering the ability to express intricate melodic and rhythmic patterns with precision and clarity on the flute.

- Ability to give 30-minute performances in five Ragas of Hindustani classical music.
